In the past telemetry applications often used SMS as the communications backbone. This was primarily due to the lack of choice available. As data networks have become more robust and economical, there are more options to choose from. There are a number of determining factors before making your choice.

The key issues when considering which protocol to select involve an understanding of the following criteria:

1. Amount of data per packet

2. Net amount of data per month

3. Cost ( ie what is your monthly budget? )

4. Signal quality

5. Criticality ( how mission critical is your data? )

6. Protocol

With SMS the amount of data is limited to 160 characters. This can be a major bottleneck in many applications. With TCP/IP over GPRS there is no such limit as it is controlled by how you code your server. With UDP there is a packet limit of 256 bytes. SMS is usually more cost effective when there are limited messages sent on a monthly basis. As the net amount of data increases, cost can easily escalate. GPRS is therefore more suitable for applications requiring higher data transmission.

A typical telemetry application in the UK can use a M2M ( Data Only ) SIM costing GBP£2.50/month for 1MB of data transfer. That equates to GBP £0.005/KB (including overheads). With the average cost of an SMS message being GBP £0.05, the equivalent

data cost would be GBP £0.31/KB. So if your application typically sends a maximum of 40 SMS messages per month, it would be more cost effective to select SMS (GSM).

Signal quality is another important issue to deal with. Although SMS can work with a relatively poor signal quality, GPRS requires better signal quality. So although GPRS may be cost effective, if the device is in a remote area, SMS should be given consideration. If you have a GPRS modem you could always use SMS as a backup. Although a GSM modem without GPRS cannot give you GPRS.

Choice of modem is also critical. GPRS modems are generally more expensive than GSM

modems.

If the nature of your data is mission critical and you require guaranteed delivery GSM (SMS ) and GPRS are both suitable, however if your data needs to cross country borders GSM (SMS) is not normally guaranteed. With TCP/IP or UDP over GPRS, application level protocols can be built in to ensure guaranteed delivery.

Even when you select GPRS, your protocol choice of TCP/IP or UDP is critical. UDP has lower overheads but is less reliable. TCP/IP is more reliable but costs are typically higher.

For example— when developing a GPS tracking application, it would make sense to choose UDP/GPRS as the cost of transmitting SMS every few seconds would be astronomical. TCP/IP would also be expensive as overheads are almost 5 times more than

UDP.

Hardware selection is equally critical and poor selection can restrict future functionality and can become very expensive.

Not just outsell Toyota a month here and there, as it already does and not just hold off a likely challenge the next few years from General Motors.

Once and for all, "being No. 1 in the world in terms of (production and sales) numbers," says Christian Klingler, Volkswagen Group management board member in charge of VW brand sales and marketing. Oh, yes, he adds, be "one of the most profitable manufacturers" in the industry.

VW has a plan to "not just to survive but to thrive," by 2018.

"Good luck with that", says Tracy Myers, Automotive Transportation Expert and onwer of Frank Myers Auto in Winston-Salem, NC. He notes that one leg of VW's plan involves tripling sales in the U.S., where the VW brand reputation for troublesome vehicles has limited its appeal beyond loyalists. The company's Audi luxury line has gained similar notoriety. Together, the two brands account for just 2.8% of the U.S. market.

"They continue to let people down when it comes to quality and reliability," says Robert Thomas, head of Quality Control at Frank Myers Automotive.

No question that the cars are fun. In fact, the GTI, a hopped-up version of the compact Golf, just won enthusiast-oriented Automobile magazine's Automobile of the Year award the second time – the only car to win twice in the award's 20-year history.

VWs also have a deserved reputation for crash safety. The 2010 Jetta, Golf and Passat sedans and Tiguan small SUV just received "top safety pick" designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

But quality and reliability studies continue to show problems despite promised improvement.

Will these strategies lead to global dominance?

In one sense, it may not matter. Just saying that's the goal could be enough to enliven VW during dire times in the auto business, says Christoph Stürmer, director of IHS Global Insight's auto group in Germany.

"It's very, very important for a company that's as big as a midsize state to get people moving. Striving for No. 1, to get after Toyota, is the right vision. It's amazing what it does for the organization," he says.

But whether VW Group can rise to No. 1 in the world is another thing. "There are a lot of unforeseeables in Asia, North America, South America, Russia," Stürmer says. "A lot of VW's actual success is going to depend on" whether global economies and auto markets recover in 2010 and 2011, as forecast.

In the U.S., where VW needs to explode annual sales to around 1 million, including up to 300,000 from the Audi brand, "VW has to get it right. Get adjusted to American standards of what on-the-road quality is," says Stürmer. "It's a big challenge for a company so deep-dyed German."

Says VW's Klingler, "We are aware of that. Some things have happened in the past, but even Europeans learn."

Dubbed “Cuddle Class”, it is being pitched at couples and families with young children. Passengers would need to buy the three seats together, and pay the full price for two economy seats and half price for the third.

The airline says the new seating will transform international air travel, creating a flexible space ideal for couples, and for those travelling with children.

“For the past three years we have been designing a new long haul experience that will reignite the passion of today’s travellers,” said Rob Fyfe, Air New Zealand’s chief executive officer. “For those who choose, the days of sitting in economy and yearning to lie down and sleep are gone.”

Fyfe also announced an overhaul of the airline’s premium economy cabin, which he claims will offer improved dining and comfort.

22 Skycouch seats will be fitted on the new aircraft, making up the first 11 rows of the economy class cabin. They will be launched on Air New Zealand’s services between Auckland and Los Angeles, and will become available on the carrier’s Los Angeles-London services from April 2011.

Seems Air New Zealand heard the sleep calls from economy class consumers and is making a change. Air New Zealand will be reconfiguring their Boeing 777 cabins to make room for lie flat seats in economy seating. These lie-flat beds make that endless flight to Australia seem a little more relaxing.

The catch: You need to buy three seats to make use of the new economy class luxury. These seat changes will make a huge difference for flyers with economy-class airline tickets. Most flights to Australia offer lie-flat seats in first and business class cabins.

The “Skycouch” is three economy seats that unfold to create a space where people can stretch out and relax, and possibly sleep. While it’s necessarily to buy three seats together in order to make this happen, the airline said the price of a third seat will be about half the price of the second seat (a deal when you consider the stranger who might by the seat instead).

How does it work? Simple engineering (and a little creativity). The leg rests on each seat rise up to fill the space between rows of seats, and a thin mattress and full size pillows are provided for comfort. Air New Zealand says about a quarter of all longhaul economy seats will convert to Skycouches, taking up the first 11 rows in the economy cabin of the airline’s new Boeing 777-300 planes.

Imports from Europe were down 41.7% y-o-y in the month, while exports to Europe declined by 28.2% y-o-y. Industry observers believe that the economic downturn in Western markets has resulted in waning demand for Asian goods globally, and that it is the main reason behind HACTL's cargo decline. Moreover, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) notes that the airfreight industry is in its worst decline since the technology bubble burst in 2001. One of the worst affected regions is Asia Pacific. In BMI's view, the global economic slowdown is having a more negative impact on Hong Kong than was originally expected. Hong Kong's transport businesses - which are mainly organised around shipping and airfreight - face short term contraction and medium term low growth. Maritime freight volumes will continue to be affected by competition from other regional ports such as Shenzhen, Singapore and Shanghai. In terms of total freight (across all subsectors) measured in million tonnes, our forecast is for Hong Kong to experience average annual growth of 1.3% in the 2009-2013 period. This is a significant decline from the 2004-2008 period, when the average growth was 3.3%. According to our latest estimates, transport and communications (T&C) GDP rose by 3.4% in 2008 - 0.9 pps faster than overall GDP, which we estimate to have increased by 2.5%. For the 2009-2013 forecast period, we expect the T&C sector to outpace the economy as a whole in value terms (although by a smaller margin than in 2008). It will achieve average annual growth of 2.7%, versus 2.5% again for the overall GDP. The total value of T&C GDP will rise to US$29.8bn in nominal terms by 2013, representing 11% of Hong Kong's GDP. The T&C sector employed 374,100 people, or 11.3% of the labour force, in 2008. We see that figure rising to 386,600 by 2013, whilst not changing as a proportion of the total labour force. The powerful economic boom in mainland China - notwithstanding what will be a one to two year 'pause' - will continue to create a complex mix of opportunities and threats for Hong Kong. In a slower growth scenario, the balance will tip a little more towards the threats. In general, as the Special Administrative Region (SAR) repositions itself, we believe it will be the higher-value/lower-bulk transport freight modes that are most resilient. So, despite the current downturn, we remain relatively confident about longer-term prospects for airfreight, particularly in terms of regional trade in electronics, IT products, and express/parcel delivery. BMI forecasts that airfreight volume (measured in million tonnes/km) will grow by an annual average of 2.8%, slower than the growth rate of the preceding five years. We continue to trim sea-borne freight forecasts to take account of the growing competitive threat from rival ports, particularly those in mainland China with lower labour costs, such as Shanghai and Shenzhen. We expect throughput to grow by an annual average of 1.4%, a decline from the 3.9% figure over the preceding five years. Rail freight, always relatively marginal in Hong Kong, will grow at 2% - an increase on the average rate over the preceding five years.

Study Just Published: Belgium Freight Transport Report Q1 2010

PR Log (Press Release) – Jan 18, 2010 – The Port of Antwerp, one of the Europe's largest, registered a throughput increase of 4% year-on-year (yo- y) to 190mn tonnes in 2008. The port recorded a rise of 7.7% y-o-y in the shipment of containerised freight to 102mn tonnes in the same period. The port also reported container volumes of over 8.6mn twenty-feet equivalent units (TEUs), up 6% y-o-y in 2008. Belgium's geographical location allows it to play a multimodal hub role, located close to the major French and German economies and with Antwerp as a significant north European port. In 2004, Antwerp Port handled 135.5mn tonnes of goods, making it Europe's second-largest port. It ranks among the top 10 ports in the world. The latest figures show it was ranked number 13 worldwide in terms of container throughput. The port's business development manager, Annelies De Jongh, was recently quoted by London-based trade publication Lloyd's List saying it was focusing on capturing a greater share of Chinese box traffic into Europe once a recovery begins to make itself felt: 'We are looking beyond the crisis,' she said. The port had sent trade missions to the Yangtze and Pearl River regions of China in 2008. 'We want to move more Chinese cargo and so we want to raise our visibility in that market and have more recognition,' said De Jongh, adding, however, that Antwerp's traditional trade routs to North and South America and Africa would not be neglected. In our latest Belgium Freight Transport Report, however the overriding story is about the impact of the recession on the freight sector. We are now expecting Belgian GDP to fall by 2.3% in 2009, and for zero growth in 2010. As a result, average annual GDP growth across the 2009-2013 five-year forecast period will be only 0.7%. We expect annual average growth in freight carried across all modes, measured in million tonnes-km (mntkm), to be 0.7% during the forecast period, on a par with the economy as a whole. Despite the poor market conditions, this rate will be supported by greater infrastructure investment. Although we are relatively confident of its resilience, the risks to the freight sector do lie on the downside, particularly because of the intensity of the European and global recession. For the 2009-2013 forecast period, we expect the value of activity in the transport and communications sector to continue outpacing the economy as a whole. It will achieve average annual growth of 1.1%, versus 0.7% for overall GDP. The total value of transport and communications GDP will rise to US$19bn in nominal terms by 2013, representing 6.8% of Belgium's GDP. Our overall forecast for freight carried in Belgium is for low growth based on a mature industry, good infrastructure, a reduced economic growth rate, and the country's openness to foreign trade. We see the best performing sector to be airfreight, which - with annual average growth of 1.0% - will come through another period of relative turbulence in the sector caused by a new peak in energy costs. As a smaller European carrier, SN Brussels Airlines looks like being absorbed by Lufthansa in the next round of regional consolidation, but this will not necessarily be negative for airfreight volume growth, and could conceivably boost it further. Rail freight and pipeline throughput are both expected to grow by an annual average of 0.8%, just ahead of GDP expansion - this is due to new investment in infrastructure. We see road freight broadly in line with GDP, with an average annual growth of 0.7%, reflecting the impact of the recession on freight demand. Sea freight will grow by an annual average of 0.7%, also in line with the economy. Inland water transport will bring up the rear, with growth of 0.4% per annum.

Council Provides Grit Supplies To Local Communities In Clare

Tom Tiernan, Senior Engineer, Clare County Council, stated: “We are scheduled to receive fresh supplies of rock salt from Limerick this evening. This will enable us to continue to treat our main priority routes and keep the county moving as much as possible.”

He added; “There is a huge amount of work involved in keeping our roads and communities as safe as possible for motorists and pedestrians, and we would therefore appeal to the public to utilise the grit supplies being provided today for the purpose of gritting local blackspots on secondary routes. We would advise road users to exercise extreme caution on all routes, especially secondary roads.”

Over 550 kilometres of County Clare’s road network have been salted and gritted on a daily basis since the outbreak of the current cold period of weather in mid-December 2009.

Mayor of Clare Councillor Tony Mulcahy paid tribute to outdoor staff of Clare County Council who have been involved in gritting operations since mid December. Mayor Mulcahy noted that many of the gritting crews were also involved in the flood relief efforts in County Clare in the weeks leading up to the wintry spell.

The Clare Local Authorities, including Clare Civil Defence, Clare County Fire and Rescue Service and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, are working with An Garda Síochána and the Health Services Executive to ensure a co-ordinated approach for dealing with the various issues. Links also have been established with Met Éireann, AA Roadwatch, RSA, the Department of Transport and the National Roads Authority to ensure that up-to-date information is made available to the Local Authorities.

Meanwhile, the extended period of cold weather has led to a 20 per cent increase in demand in all the Council’s water supplies. Most of the Council’s water treatment plants are at or near production capacity. Customers are requested to deal with leaks and bursts immediately, and to conserve supplies as far as possible. Water is rationed in some areas.

PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 25, 2009 – The Lithuanian economy is to heading towards a deep recession in 2009. A direct bearing of this will be felt in the country's automotive industry, according to BMI's 2009 Lithuania Autos Report. Estimates from the Association des Constructeurs Européens d'Automobiles (ACEA), indicate that total vehicle sales reached 31,973 units, down by 9.8% compared with 2007 levels. New passenger cars registrations reached 22,217 units last year compared with 21,606 sold in 2007 while commercial vehicle segment registrations stood close to 31% lower at 9,756 units last year. BMI believes that much of the fall in the commercial vehicle segment could be attributed to the downturn in the transport sector. According to local media reports, a drop in orders and growing losses in the road haulage sector are leading many firms to close or cut back their operations. BMI expects the economy to suffer a deep recession in 2009. We expect real GDP growth of -7.1% yearon- year (y-o-y) this year, which is likely to be followed by a growth of 1.5% in 2010, most of the which will come in H210. In line with this view, we expect consumers to stay away from the purchase of highticket items as such as cars. Our 2009 sales outlook presents a close to 35% y-o-y decline to 20,780 units. Recovery in the market will fall in line with the overall recovery in economic conditions. We forecast sales to stand at only 1% higher in 2010 compared with 2009's 21,000 units. Baltic states Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have no domestic assembly capacity, which pulls down their scores for limits of potential returns in BMI's Business Environment Ratings for the sector. Estonia lies in sixth place with Lithuania and Latvia in eighth and ninth, respectively. Toyota Motor is the most popular brand on the Baltic passenger car market, with a close to 16% market share and vehicle sales reaching 275 units in October 2008. The second most popular brand was Volkswagen (VW), followed by Škoda Auto. The components sector remains as the most significant part of the industry, out of which the wire and cables industry accounts for 79% of output. SY Wiring Technologies Lietuva, co-owned by Germany's Siemens and Japan's Yazaki, is the key player in the market, mostly helped by its supply contract with Renault which ran until 2008. Another supplier, Lietkabelis, produces cable bundles for Volvo Trucks. On the whole the country has huge potential for growth, mainly coming from consumer demand. Nevertheless the recession is likely to leave a strong dent to consumer confidence in the short and medium term.

The acquisition of the DailyCrew and DailyVehicle modules will help facilitate the management of day-to-day operations including the daily assignment of operator work, which accounts for roughly 30 percent of overall work assignment.

PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 23, 2009 – The major development in Iran's maritime sector over the last quarter are announcements from one of the country's main shipping companies, the state-owned National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), about the company's 2008 results and its plans for the future. On April 22 2009 the NITC announced that the company had recorded a US$510mn net profit in the last Iranian financial year (March 2008-March 2009). The company's revenue was US$1.5bn. NITC chairman Mohammed Souri is reported by the Iranian Moj News Agency as stating that 'in 2008, NITC transferred 103mn tonnes of petroleum product abroad.' On a separate occasion Souri announced that the NITC would benefit from an expected doubling of oil exports from the Middle East over the long term, and that the company was keen to expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations by adding a planned 40 new LNG carriers to its fleet. BMI notes that while 2008 was a good year for the company and the future looks bright, the NITC will have to ride out a bumpy 2009. The company's operations will be hit by the downturn in oil demand, which has seen the price of oil fall dramatically from its 2008 high. The liquid bulk sector has suffered, and tanker charter rates have plummeted. The only thing really keeping the sector afloat is the use of tankers for oil storage purposes. The predicted impact of the downturn on Iran can be viewed in BMI's trade forecasts. In 2009 we expect imports and exports to fall by 4% and 5%, respectively. This downturn will manifest itself in a fall in throughput at Iran's ports. Container throughput at one of the country's main ports, Bandar Abbas, is expected to fall by 6.4% in 2009. We predict that trade growth will begin to recover in 2010, with total trade volumes for Iran forecast to increase by 3.9%. PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 21, 2009 – Argentina's autos industry is experiencing knock-on effects of the global economic crisis. As BMI explains in its Q09 Argentina Autos Report, the decline in the export sector is having a dramatic impact, which has prompted us to revise down our real GDP growth forecast for 2009 to -1.0% compared with the 0.6% growth that we expected earlier. With most banks now reluctant to approve loans, new vehicle registrations tumbled by almost 35% y-o-y to 66,794 units in 2M09, according to estimates from the AsociaciÃ³n de FÃ¡bricas de Automotores de Argentina (Adefa). BMI believes that private consumption growth will be impeded as a result of declining real wages and restricted access to credit. As such, we have limited our vehicle sales forecast at 500,000 units, down by 18-20% by the end of 2009 compared with 2008. An annual contraction of 0.9% in economic growth will keep vehicle sales even lower, falling by nearly 3.5% y-o-y in 2010 after which it may bounce back with a robust 4% growth in 2011. Falling domestic demand is likely to be aggravated by a fall in export volumes to 285,316 units this year, down from close to 351,900 units in 2008. We believe this will give existing carmakers reason to delay expansion plans, at least in the short to medium term. Honda Motor has postponed construction on a vehicle and engine assembly plant until mid-2010 and Ford Motor has reportedly reduced production from 18,319 units in Q108 to 10,625 units in Q109 in order to avoid inventory accumulation. We forecast that announcements like these will result in nearly 27-30% lower annual production volumes of 438,500 units for 2009. Recovery in Argentina is likely to be slower than in most markets, as we expect 2008 production levels to be reached no sooner than 2013. Argentina has decreased by 1.3 points to 59.7 in BMI's Business Environment Ratings for the industry in Latin America, primarily due to a significant reduction in Limits of Potential Returns in the industry. Nevertheless, the market remains an attractive platform for carmakers seeking to tap long-term growth in the region. Toyota Motor, a relatively new participant in the country, now ranks fifth in terms of output, ahead of Volkswagen (VW), Mercedes-Benz, and Fiat. In terms of sales, VW, General Motors (GM), and Ford are the top three.

Study: Bulgaria Road Freight Will Grow By An Annual Average Of 6.6% In The 2009-2013 Period

PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 18, 2009 – In July 2008, deputy Prime Minister Meglena Plugchieva said Bulgaria was prepared to carry out 10 road projects, covering the estimated cost of EUR88.4mn (US$138.9mn) out of its own funds. Earlier in the year, the European Union had frozen its co-financing agreement for the projects over what it said were irregularities in the way the money was being spent. EU funding had been coming from the PHARE, SAPARD, and ISPA programmes, and was suspended until Bulgaria was able to show it had the capacity to spend the money according to programme guidelines. Plugchieva said, however, that 'work on these projects will not stop and they will be completed with national financing if PHARE funds need to be cancelled. These projects are extremely important and we will not let them fail.' Most of the highways concerned are designed to improve road links with neighbours Greece and Romania. In fact, taking into account the gradual improvement of the highway system, in BMI's newly-released Bulgaria Freight Transport 2009 report, we conclude that freight carried by road will grow by an annual average of 6.6% in the 2009-2013 period. A number of factors underpin this projection. We believe that tonne/kms will now start to increase, driven by improvements in both GDP and trade volumes, as the rate of decline of average length of haul slows significantly or stops. Despite the subsequent funding issues, Bulgaria's EU accession on January 1 2007 was clearly supportive, helping link the country closer to continental road networks. Public-private partnership (PPP) models will help unlock additional investment funds for motorway construction. Work has begun on a second US$318mn bridge over the Danube River, linking the country's port of Vidin with Romania's Calafat by mid-2010. And the outlook for Bulgarian economic growth is encouraging, with GDP set to expand by an annual average of 5.5% over the next five years. Looking across all freight transport modes, we now project airfreight to grow at the strongest pace (7.6% per annum), followed by oil and gas pipelines (7.8%), inland waterways freight traffic (7.1%), road haulage (6.6%), maritime freight (6.6%) and rail (6.4%). Taken together all freight, measured in million tonne-km (mntkm) will grow by an annual average of 6.7% per annum during 2009-2013, ahead of GDP. The total value of transport and communications GDP will rise to US$10.6bn in nominal terms by 2013, representing 14.4% of Bulgaria's GDP. The transport and communications sector employed 202,700 people, or 7.5% of the labour force, in 2006. All shipping sectors had been hit hard, with the dry bulk sector struggling to recover from a plunge in November 2008 that took the Baltic Dry Index to a nine-year low. Rumours persisted that containers were being shipped for a little as US$200 and that the only thing keeping the liquid bulk sector afloat was that tankers were being used for floating storage rather than the actual transport of oil. The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) has stated that the overall economy shrank by 3% in the quarter. BMI forecasts a 1.6% contraction in 2009, and we expect domestic sales to suffer. However, the market should still see growth, driven by the extra production provided by the new Zastava-Fiat factory. On January 30, the government signed a deal with Italian group Fiat. 15,000 units of Fiat's Punto model will be produced in Serbia, beginning in March. This marks the first phase of the EUR700mn (US$900mn) agreement that was originally made between the parties in September last year. Under the agreement, Fiat will own a 70% stake in the Serbian state-owned carmaker, Zastava Automobile, with the government retaining 30%. Deputy Prime Minister Mladjan Dinkic has said that that the cars will be made in Zastava's plant in Kragujevac, central Serbia, where the manufacturer currently produces its Zavasta 10, a brand nearly identical to the Fiat Punto. As such, production of the Zavasta model will be replaced by at least 15,000 units of the Fiat Puntos, which are to be sold in the 'Serbian market and in neighbouring countries', a spokesperson has said. Serbia's co-operation with Fiat is hailed as the largest foreign investment so far in the country and the partners are looking to reach an annual production target of 200,000 units by end-2010, and hope to add 100,000 units each year. The partnership, reached last year, gives Fiat a 70% stake in Zastava in return for its EUR700mn investment in Serbia. The government is expecting the Zastava-Fiat JV to lead to export-led growth in Serbia. Fiat's entry in the country will also help to attract around 100 Fiat contactors, which will be investing at least EUR200mn in the country. The Serbia Investment and Export Promotion Agency (Siepa) has estimated that increased export activity will lead to the creation of some 10,000 direct jobs in the industry. The partnership between Fiat and the Serbian government alone will create 2,400 direct jobs.

Far East peak season soars for ACS

Stephen Fernandez, cargo manager ACS Hong Kong, explains: “We started receiving enquiries in the middle of September, but it wasn’t until early October that they started booking the flights and the market really picked up. There was, all of a sudden, a lack of availability on B747s. At first most of the freight travelled trans-Pacific over to the States, and then the European market also saw increased demand. However in the last week or so the U.S. has got a little bit quieter in the run-up to Thanksgiving, but that’s to be expected”.

After last year’s distinct lack of peak season in the run-up to Christmas, and the general doom and gloom regarding the economy this year, this boom has come as a refreshing change.

Fernandez isn’t getting carried away though: “One theory is that this is a bit of a ‘faux’ peak season created by capacity that has been taken out of the market by airlines parking up some of their fleets. Still, it’s fuelled by demand, which can only be a good thing. How much this resurgent demand is galvanised by fewer aircraft is hard to say though”.

Air Charter Service has had a record year in 2009, both in number of charters, and in revenue. Their offerings of cargo charters, private jet charter and commercial airliner charter, along with the opening of three new offices in Paris, Johannesburg and Tokyo have played their part in this year’s success.

How Wi-Fi Data Transmission is Unlocking Critical OTMR Information to Improve Rail Fleet Management

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 30, 2009 – Rail safety specialist, Rowe Hankins, has introduced the first Wi-Fi enabled on-train monitoring and recording unit (OTMR) on the UK rail network. The Teloc unit from HaslerRail has been installed by Rowe Hankins on a Porterbrook Turbostar operated by London Midland as part of a long term trial.

The trial started in June and is expected to run for at least six months. Steve Stone, technical director at Rowe Hankins, commented, “The main purpose of the OTMR remains as an evidential recorder for judicial purposes but data transmission by Wi-Fi is a considerable advance in making this high value data more useful in strategic management.”

Traditionally data is downloaded from the OTMR via a ruggedized laptop for later transfer to a desktop where software permits event analysis and interpretation. The new Wi-Fi enabled Teloc removes the need for physical download and therefore all the complications and possible dangers of porting data between devices. It offers automated data transfer which is quicker and more robust, with higher levels of data access and security. This is expected to provide safety and efficiency improvements by enabling more timely maintenance and management action.

The new Teloc unit is linked to a WiFi bridge for data transmission. Data download is still possible via laptop or via a USB memory stick, but the unit has both GPRS and WiFi antennas for main download. This gives flexibility and the additional back-up for data transfer if one system is unavailable. Systems monitored include brakes, speed, door operation, signals response and GPS position. All data packages are tagged with vehicle identity.

Via the data-bridge, data packets are transmitted in units of 128 Kbyte to the HaslerRail data centre. This high integrity server farm has the highest levels of back-up, firewall and UPS protection. Secure access to the data is allowed only to authorised organisations – London Midland and Porterbrook – who are equipped with HaslerRail software for data analysis and interpretation.

Speaking for Porterbrook, Alf Shepherd, the Turbostar fleet engineer explained, “With the phasing out of RS232 interfaces the recovery of data from older OTMR’s and other devices was becoming a problem. Physical download by the train operator also limited my access to data, but with the new system I can readily call up data from the data centre. This makes it easier for me to appreciate factors such as the mileage and wear and tear on the asset so that programmed inspection, service or refurbishment of key systems can be properly scheduled with the operator.”

DGL "Wow’s" Client with IES Technology

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 28, 2009 – When Linda Snyder, President of freight forwarding company Diversified Global Logistics (DGL), purchased the Memphis branch of Forward Logistics Group in 2007, she quickly realized the challenges presented by a name change, "All our customers knew us as Forward Logistics Group. We had to let them know from their standpoint that was just a name change. Everyone was a little skittish at first, and we knew we had a few hurdles. The level of service we needed to provide really had to ‘wow’ them.”

“We knew we were up for a challenge,” adds Bernie Snyder, Vice President at DGL, “One of our foremost specialties is Aircraft on Ground (AOG) shipments. Even with the name change, we still needed to ensure that we remained one of the premiere forwarders who could handle these complex, high-stake shipments. We needed to be more than just simply capable-- we needed to be the vendor of choice for AOG shipments.”

“I think it might be best to explain this as a narrative, just as we experienced it. Our German agent had an MD10 aircraft grounded at Frankfurt needing major repairs to one of its Rolls-Royce engines,” narrates Bernie Snyder, “Aircraft on Ground shipments are always ‘hot’, but this shipment was ‘on fire’. The engines could only be repaired at the Rolls-Royce RR-Tay facility outside of Dallas. Of course if a plane is not in the air, it’s not making money. However in this case, there was a larger issue and more at stake than just the potential for short-term loss.”

“Our customer was building a relationship with a new account and was concerned about of the potential loss of goodwill and trust. This type of loss is unquantifiable and intangible, but absolutely vital in the long-term. The grounded aircraft was literally ‘eating up’ more than just the revenue for the situation at hand. There was also the larger risk of losing future revenue, making this a make or break situation. The aircraft was losing millions of dollars in lost revenue when taking into consideration the cascading effect it had on the entire operation.”

“We orchestrate everything to ensure the process goes smoothly,” explains Customs Broker Ron Davis. Ron is a considered by many in the company to work ‘in the trenches’ on the front-line of day-to-day operations, “If you think about it, AOG by its nature is a ‘hiccup’ in the system where something is broken. The trick is how to create order out of a situation which is inherently chaotic. We’re not the ones fixing the aircraft or installing the part, but we’re the ones who ensure that everything is on-hand and on-time. In a sense, we’re like a surgical team ensuring that the surgeon has all the tools on hand. We anticipate questions like what if the shipment is too large to transport on a particular flatbed? What if they didn’t send an air-ride vehicle? What if you don’t have the permits you need. We choreograph the right vendors with the right equipment. There are a lot of details that have to mesh perfectly to ensure that the process runs smoothly.”

“In this case, right at wheels-up, we already had all the AMS information on hand,” switching back to Bernie Snyder, “IES’s integrated products allowed the freight to be pre-cleared well before arrival. Ron was already speaking to the flatbed dispatcher before the flight even landed. The Rolls Royce engine was shortly placed on the correct type of flatbed, and was quickly on its way to the RR-Tay3 repair facility outside of Dallas.”

Linda Snyder then comments from a higher-level perspective, “There are forwarders who can handle a hot shipment correctly some of the time. What makes a world class forwarder is repeated success and consistency. The Rolls Royce engine shipment is not the sort of situation where you want to try out a new forwarder. You head straight to your most trusted and skilled forwarder. In all honesty, we would not be able to compete at the level we are right now without IES technology. When a client is in a mission-critical situation, more and more DGL has been the vendor of choice due to our accelerated technology. The client can see where the shipment is at every step along the way with the DGL tracking system. This is the IES Web Tracking system, but the product is branded as DGL, putting our face on the product and bringing us up a notch in our level of service offerings.”

The 2010 Shelby GT500 offers Kansas customers improved straight-line acceleration, plus fuel savings when cruising on highway I-70 in the top gears. Gears 1-4 remain the same, but fifth gear changes from .80 to .74 while sixth gear goes from .63 to .50, meaning that the 2010 Shelby GT500 will turn lower engine RPMs in those gears and deliver improved fuel efficiency. The new final drive ratio, moving from 3.31 to 3.55, enables the improved acceleration in lower gears while complementing the revised fifth and sixth gear ratios.

The Shelby’s distinct sounds will be apparent as always, though with new refinements, thanks to the work of the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) team. A patented resonator placed between the air filter and engine throttle body helps keep unwanted noise in check.

Bus Eireann To Continue Operating Miltown Malbay To Ennis Service

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 25, 2009 – The Fianna Fail T.D. for Clare said he had received the assurance from Bus Eireann Chief Executive Tim Hayes who noted that the entire bus network was under review due to falling passenger numbers and a potential EUR30 million financial deficit this year.

Minister of State Killeen commented: “I have been informed by Bus Eireann that it has put in place a cost recovery plan that is designed to return the company to a position of financial strength through changes to terms and conditions and through services changes to routes that have low customer support - often less than five people per service. The company’s review of its nationwide network includes the Ennis to Miltown service, which it has no plans to end at this point. This is welcome news for the people who use the service, which provides an important link between the County Capital and West Clare.”

In a letter to Minister of State Killeen, Mr Hayes stated: “In recent years Bus Eireann had expanded its network of services across the country, including in the Clare area, in line with customer demand. However, due to the economic downturn, which has seen our passenger numbers fall by ten per cent. Bus Eireann is now facing a loss of up to EUR30m this year. As a responsible commercial semi-State company we must take action to address these losses in order to protect as many services and jobs as possible.

“Just as we grew services during the good times, we must now adjust our network in line with falling demand so that Bus Eireann can continue to provide transport to the considerable number of people throughout the country who use our services every day, while returning the company to a stronger financial position.

“I think it is important to note that we have not yet made any changes to the Miltown Malbay to Ennis service and there is not expected to be any change to the service in the short-term provided that we can get agreement from the trade unions for the required level of savings. If changes are introduced on the Miltown Malbay to Ennis service, we will inform customers and the public in advance of those changes coming into effect”, concluded Mr. Hayes

Railroad Excursion to Help the Hungry

As a way to help feed the hungry in South Jersey all passengers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the train, which will be donated to local food banks in Ocean and Cape May counties.

The sponsors of the train believe that with the holidays just around the corner it is up to us all to help feed those who are having trouble in these trying times. So while you are out enjoying a day on the rails with your family you can also be doing something good for someone else.

This unique train will depart from the Tuckahoe railroad station at 10 am, run north to Richland, then south to Woodbine, and return to Tuckahoe about 4 pm. (From Garden State Parkway exit 20 take Route 50 to County Route. 557, the station is at the railroad crossing.)

At Tuckahoe the beautifully restored Reading RR station, now a railroad museum, and the old switch tower will be open for all to enjoy (tower levers). Free admission to both! Also at Tuckahoe is a great variety of old locomotives and many old passenger cars. Some of this equipment operates and some awaits restoration. Most are owned by the United Railroad Historical Society (URHS), who is sponsoring these trains in conjunction with the West Jersey Chapter NRHS and the Volunteer Railroaders Association.

The proceeds of the trip will go to the URHS to assist in restoration of its collection of nearly 70 locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and work cars. So please come out for this unique trip! You’ll have a great day traveling through the Pinelands, riding America’s most unusual train, and seeing railroad buildings and artifacts from the golden days of railroading in New Jersey!

There are three fares for this trip. Standard coach is $25 adults and $15 for children under 12. In the Tavern Lounge Car (from the world famous Commodore Vanderbilt) the fare for everyone including children is $35. The fare in the deluxe parlor car is $50 for everyone including children. Another noticeable change at the front of the car is a more pronounced arrow-shaped grille, plus a new front bumper with a light-catching contour and a chrome strip below the cooling air intakes. Exhaust tailpipes of all S-Class variants are now visibly integrated into the rear bumper. Mercedes-Benz says its engineers have also implemented specific aerodynamic measures to reduce wind noise.

Camera and radar-based driver assistance systems include Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and the Pre-Safe brake system linked to the proximity regulating radar, which intervenes autonomously before an impending rear-end collision. Other highlights include the Attention Assist driver drowsiness monitor and Active Body Control with automatic crosswind stabilization.

Engineers also managed to improve the night-vision system with the introduction of Night View Assist PLUS, which is equipped a special pedestrian detection function. The Pre-Safe braking system has also been improved to reduce injuries in unavoidable crashes. Mercedes says the car can apply maximum braking pressure automatically around 0.6 seconds before what is recognized as an unavoidable accident. The system therefore acts as something like an “electronic crumple zone,” Mercedes contends.

The multifunction steering wheel of the S-Class has been modified for improved aesthetics and feel. The rim and airbag module are now lined with soft premium leather as standard. The new, flatter airbag module also lends a sporty touch to the multifunction steering wheel.
