World's Cheapest Car Nano Will Hit The Roads Today

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 17, 2009 – Tata Motors Ltd (TAMO.BO), India's largest vehicles maker, said on Thursday it would deliver the Nano, the world's cheapest car, to its first customer on Friday.
Chairman Ratan Tata had showcased the Nano at an auto show in New Delhi in January last year, but consumer bookings began only in April this year after the project was delayed due to land disputes at its planned site in the eastern state of West Bengal.
The plant for producing the Nano was shifted to a new site in Gujarat on the west coast, but the first batch of Nanos would come from its car plant in Pantnagar in northern India.
Tata has assured price protection for the first 100,000 customers, for whom the cars will be available for 100,000 rupees ($2,053), excluding taxes.

Allied Logistics, Inc., President Completes Tuck Executive Education Program

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 11, 2009 – On December 7, 2007 the Tuck School of Business at Darmouth College graduated 33 business owners.  Milton Kirby, president of Allied Logistics, Inc. was among the graduates.
The course, Building a High-Performing Minority Business, provided participants step-by-step guidance that helps minority businesses survive and prosper. The program teaches participants how to become a self-diagnosing consultant with the tools to evaluate and integrate their business the way large corporations do. Along with faculty and classmates, Mr. Kirby worked through customer-focused strategy and planning, organizational leadership and performance inspiration, cash and human resource management, and systems and process implementation and monitoring.
According to Kirby, the Tuck faculty provided frameworks for success and demonstrated how to put those frameworks into practice. The program included structured class sessions, case discussions, small-group activities, and simulations.
Program topics included a broad range of business development topics including:
> Strategy and Implementation—assess current strategy, prepare for intermediate-term growth, design a plan for implementation

> Analysis of Financial Statements—analyze a balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows

> Managing the Customer Asset—review a framework for operations strategy, design and implement a marketing strategy that coordinates with operations strategy

> Strategic Alliances—examine the advantages of alliances, learn how to select partners, evaluate deals, consider the people process

> Leadership—learn successful leadership strategies and how they improve company performance
The program is lead by faculty director Leonard Greenhalgh, a professor of management at Tuck. Other faculty members include Ella Bell, Punam Keller, David Pike and Phillip Stockton.
According to Greenhalgh, Building a High-Performing Minority Business is designed for owners and senior executives of minority-owned companies who have at least three to five years of experience running a successful small business and typically have at least $300,000 in annual sales.
As a graduate of the program, Milton Kirby now joins the ranks of the Tuck Minority Business Executive Program Alumni Association—an active network with 2,800 nationwide members. The association acts as a national advocacy group for minority business education, a support network that promotes business interests of graduates, and a forum for enhanced alumni relations The association also raises scholarship funds to help minority executives attend Tuck's executive education programs

Scales Help Busy Port Keep Traffic Flowing

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 10, 2009 – To ship cargo on time, ports need to handle large volumes of traffic quickly and efficiently. With reliable truck scales from METTLER TOLEDO, Norfolk International Terminals is able to weigh as many as 2,900 trucks per day.
The terminal transports intermodal containers to more cities faster and more efficiently than any other terminal in the United States. Norfolk International Terminals is the largest of the four general-cargo terminals operated by Virginia International Terminals that handle this large amount of inbound and outbound traffic. Covering approximately 660 acres, Norfolk International Terminals is home to the world’s largest container cranes, which are 271 feet high and move as many as forty 50-ton containers per hour. Container storage at the terminal is more than 34,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
Concrete-deck Scales

METTLER TOLEDO has been part of Norfolk International Terminals’ success since 1996. By supplying and maintaining 15 concrete-deck truck scales, it enables the terminal to handle the large number of trucks that transport cargo to and from the port. Each truck that enters the site is inspected and then weighed on an inbound scale. After being weighed, the truck proceeds to a stacker crane to have its container offloaded. The empty trucks pick up a container for the return trip and are weighed on an outbound scale.
Reliable Operation

The terminal processes about 2900 trucks per day during its peak season. That equals more than 380 weighings per day for each scale. The port’s truck scales have performed reliably. According to Harry Brittingham, Equipment Specialist, Norfolk International Terminals has replaced only two load cells in the past 12 years.
A composite structure of concrete and steel gives the weighbridge exceptional strength and durability. The result is a truck scale that delivers reliable weighing over a long service life.
