How Wi-Fi Data Transmission is Unlocking Critical OTMR Information to Improve Rail Fleet Management

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 30, 2009 – Rail safety specialist, Rowe Hankins, has introduced the first Wi-Fi enabled on-train monitoring and recording unit (OTMR) on the UK rail network.  The Teloc unit from HaslerRail has been installed by Rowe Hankins on a Porterbrook Turbostar operated by London Midland as part of a long term trial.
The trial started in June and is expected to run for at least six months.  Steve Stone, technical director at Rowe Hankins, commented, “The main purpose of the OTMR remains as an evidential recorder for judicial purposes but data transmission by Wi-Fi is a considerable advance in making this high value data more useful in strategic management.”
Traditionally data is downloaded from the OTMR via a ruggedized laptop for later transfer to a desktop where software permits event analysis and interpretation.  The new Wi-Fi enabled Teloc removes the need for physical download and therefore all the complications and possible dangers of porting data between devices.  It offers automated data transfer which is quicker and more robust, with higher levels of data access and security.  This is expected to provide safety and efficiency improvements by enabling more timely maintenance and management action.
The new Teloc unit is linked to a WiFi bridge for data transmission.  Data download is still possible via laptop or via a USB memory stick, but the unit has both GPRS and WiFi antennas for main download.  This gives flexibility and the additional back-up for data transfer if one system is unavailable.  Systems monitored include brakes, speed, door operation, signals response and GPS position.  All data packages are tagged with vehicle identity.  
Via the data-bridge, data packets are transmitted in units of 128 Kbyte to the HaslerRail data centre.  This high integrity server farm has the highest levels of back-up, firewall and UPS protection.  Secure access to the data is allowed only to authorised organisations – London Midland and Porterbrook – who are equipped with HaslerRail software for data analysis and interpretation.
Speaking for Porterbrook, Alf Shepherd, the Turbostar fleet engineer explained, “With the phasing out of RS232 interfaces the recovery of data from older OTMR’s and other devices was becoming a problem.  Physical download by the train operator also limited my access to data, but with the new system I can readily call up data from the data centre.  This makes it easier for me to appreciate factors such as the mileage and wear and tear on the asset so that programmed inspection, service or refurbishment of key systems can be properly scheduled with the operator.”

DGL "Wow’s" Client with IES Technology

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 28, 2009 – When Linda Snyder, President of freight forwarding company Diversified Global Logistics (DGL), purchased the Memphis branch of Forward Logistics Group in 2007, she quickly realized the challenges presented by a name change, "All our customers knew us as Forward Logistics Group. We had to let them know from their standpoint that was just a name change. Everyone was a little skittish at first, and we knew we had a few hurdles. The level of service we needed to provide really had to ‘wow’ them.”
“We knew we were up for a challenge,” adds Bernie Snyder, Vice President at DGL, “One of our foremost specialties is Aircraft on Ground (AOG) shipments.  Even with the name change, we still needed to ensure that we remained one of the premiere forwarders who could handle these complex, high-stake shipments. We needed to be more than just simply capable-- we needed to be the vendor of choice for AOG shipments.”
“I think it might be best to explain this as a narrative, just as we experienced  it. Our German agent had an MD10  aircraft grounded at Frankfurt needing major repairs to one of its Rolls-Royce engines,” narrates Bernie Snyder, “Aircraft on Ground shipments are always ‘hot’, but this shipment was ‘on fire’.  The engines could only be repaired at the Rolls-Royce RR-Tay facility outside of Dallas. Of course if a plane is not in the air, it’s not making money. However in this case, there was a larger issue and more at stake than just the potential for short-term loss.”
“Our customer was building a relationship with a new account and was concerned about of the potential loss of goodwill and trust. This type of loss is unquantifiable and intangible, but absolutely vital in the long-term. The grounded aircraft was literally ‘eating up’ more than just the revenue for the situation at hand. There was also the larger risk of losing future revenue, making this a make or break situation. The aircraft was losing millions of dollars in lost revenue when taking into consideration the cascading effect it had on the entire operation.”
“We orchestrate everything to ensure the process goes smoothly,” explains Customs Broker Ron Davis. Ron is a considered by many in the company to work ‘in the trenches’ on the front-line of day-to-day operations, “If you think about it, AOG by its nature is a ‘hiccup’ in the system where something is broken.  The trick is how to create order out of a situation which is inherently chaotic. We’re not the ones fixing the aircraft or installing the part, but we’re the ones who ensure that everything is on-hand and on-time. In a sense, we’re like a surgical team ensuring that the surgeon has all the tools on hand.  We anticipate questions like what if the shipment is too large to transport on a particular flatbed? What if they didn’t send an air-ride vehicle? What if you don’t have the permits you need. We choreograph the right vendors with the right equipment. There are a lot of details that have to mesh perfectly to ensure that the process runs smoothly.”
“In this case, right at wheels-up, we already had all the AMS information on hand,” switching back to Bernie Snyder, “IES’s integrated products allowed the freight to be pre-cleared well before arrival. Ron was already speaking to the flatbed dispatcher before the flight even landed. The Rolls Royce engine was shortly placed on the correct type of flatbed, and was quickly on its way to the RR-Tay3 repair facility outside of Dallas.”
Linda Snyder then comments from a higher-level perspective, “There are forwarders who can handle a hot shipment correctly some of the time. What makes a world class forwarder is repeated success and consistency. The Rolls Royce engine shipment is not the sort of situation where you want to try out a new forwarder. You head straight to your most trusted and skilled forwarder. In all honesty, we would not be able to compete at the level we are right now without IES technology.  When a client is in a mission-critical situation, more and more DGL has been the vendor of choice due to our accelerated technology. The client can see where the shipment is at every step along the way with the DGL tracking system.  This is the IES Web Tracking system, but the product is branded as DGL, putting our face on the product and bringing us up a notch in our level of service offerings.”

The Shelby’s distinct sounds will be apparent as always, though with new refinements, thanks to the work of the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) team. A patented resonator placed between the air filter and engine throttle body helps keep unwanted noise in check.

Bus Eireann To Continue Operating Miltown Malbay To Ennis Service

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 25, 2009 – The Fianna Fail T.D. for Clare said he had received the assurance from Bus Eireann Chief Executive Tim Hayes who noted that the entire bus network was under review due to falling passenger numbers and a potential EUR30 million financial deficit this year.
Minister of State Killeen commented: “I have been informed by Bus Eireann that it has put in place a cost recovery plan that is designed to return the company to a position of financial strength through changes to terms and conditions and through services changes to routes that have low customer support - often less than five people per service.  The company’s review of its nationwide network includes the Ennis to Miltown service, which it has no plans to end at this point.  This is welcome news for the people who use the service, which provides an important link between the County Capital and West Clare.”
In a letter to Minister of State Killeen, Mr Hayes stated: “In recent years Bus Eireann had expanded its network of services across the country, including in the Clare area, in line with customer demand. However, due to the economic downturn, which has seen our passenger numbers fall by ten per cent. Bus Eireann is now facing a loss of up to EUR30m this year. As a responsible commercial semi-State company we must take action to address these losses in order to protect as many services and jobs as possible.
“Just as we grew services during the good times, we must now adjust our network in line with falling demand so that Bus Eireann can continue to provide transport to the considerable number of people throughout the country who use our services every day, while returning the company to a stronger financial position.
“I think it is important to note that we have not yet made any changes to the Miltown Malbay to Ennis service and there is not expected to be any change to the service in the short-term provided that we can get agreement from the trade unions for the required level of savings.  If changes are introduced on the Miltown Malbay to Ennis service, we will inform customers and the public in advance of those changes coming into effect”, concluded Mr. Hayes

Railroad Excursion to Help the Hungry

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 23, 2009 – Capture it all on film or digital at photo stops at Richland, and Woodbine where the Reading once crossed over the Pennsylvania RR. Three different photo stops provided during the day.
As a way to help feed the hungry in South Jersey all  passengers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the train, which will be donated to local food banks in Ocean and Cape May counties.
The sponsors of the train believe that with the holidays just around the corner it is up to us all to help feed those who are having trouble in these trying times.  So while you are out enjoying a day on the rails with your family you can also be doing something good for someone  else.
This unique train will depart from the Tuckahoe railroad station at 10 am, run north to Richland, then south to Woodbine, and return to Tuckahoe about 4 pm.  (From Garden State Parkway exit 20 take Route 50 to County Route. 557, the station is at the railroad crossing.)
At Tuckahoe the beautifully restored Reading RR station, now a railroad museum, and the old switch tower will be open for all to enjoy (tower levers).  Free admission to both!  Also at Tuckahoe is a great variety of old locomotives and many old passenger cars. Some of this equipment operates and some awaits restoration.  Most are owned by the United Railroad Historical Society (URHS), who is sponsoring these trains in conjunction with the West Jersey Chapter NRHS and the Volunteer Railroaders Association.
The proceeds of the trip will go to the URHS to assist in restoration of its collection of nearly 70 locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and work cars.  So please come out for this unique trip! You’ll have a great day traveling through the Pinelands, riding America’s most unusual train, and seeing railroad buildings and artifacts from the golden days of railroading in New Jersey!
There are three fares for this trip.  Standard coach is $25 adults and $15 for children under 12.  In the Tavern Lounge Car (from the world famous Commodore Vanderbilt) the fare for everyone including children is $35.  The fare in the deluxe parlor car is $50 for everyone including children. In the Parlor Car passengers will be offered complimentary continental breakfast and beverages with snacks later in the day. Seating on the train is very limited and is sure to sell fast, so order your tickets today. Box lunches consisting of a deluxe deli sandwich (your choice of type), chips, cookie and beverage (diet or regular soda or water) may be purchased for $7.00 each when you order your ticket(s).

Although it isn’t part of Mercedes‘ New York Auto Show exhibit, the 2010 S-Class marks a modest overhaul to the German automaker’s flagship luxury sedan. In addition to interior and exterior refinements, the new S550 and S600 come with a slew of new and improved high-tech systems, including safety and convenience features.
The S550 continues to be powered by a 382 horsepower V8 with optional 4MATIC all-wheel-drive.
One of the most noticeable changes across the lineup is the addition of daytime LED running lights fitted to the outer edges of the bi-xenon lamp units. The rear end is also accented with a total of 52 distinctively arranged LEDs in the two taillights. Gone are the body-colored strips through the taillamps.
Mercedes-Benz also makes more use of light as a styling element in the interior via the standard ambient lighting, now with a choice between three lighting moods: solar (amber), neutral (white) and polar (ice-blue).
Another noticeable change at the front of the car is a more pronounced arrow-shaped grille, plus a new front bumper with a light-catching contour and a chrome strip below the cooling air intakes. Exhaust tailpipes of all S-Class variants are now visibly integrated into the rear bumper. Mercedes-Benz says its engineers have also implemented specific aerodynamic measures to reduce wind noise.
Camera and radar-based driver assistance systems include Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and the Pre-Safe brake system linked to the proximity regulating radar, which intervenes autonomously before an impending rear-end collision. Other highlights include the Attention Assist driver drowsiness monitor and Active Body Control with automatic crosswind stabilization.
Engineers also managed to improve the night-vision system with the introduction of Night View Assist PLUS, which is equipped a special pedestrian detection function. The Pre-Safe braking system has also been improved to reduce injuries in unavoidable crashes. Mercedes says the car can apply maximum braking pressure automatically around 0.6 seconds before what is recognized as an unavoidable accident. The system therefore acts as something like an “electronic crumple zone,” Mercedes contends.
The multifunction steering wheel of the S-Class has been modified for improved aesthetics and feel. The rim and airbag module are now lined with soft premium leather as standard. The new, flatter airbag module also lends a sporty touch to the multifunction steering wheel.

The key to these devices, is that they are intrinsically safe for use on tankers. there has been a great deal of debate about the use of firearms on merchant vessels. Even if you do away with the liability issues and the flag state issues of firearms on vessels, there is still the issue of supplying firearms in the countries surrounding the Gulf of Aden and along the East African Coast.
ISSG Holdings, Ltd. feels that if you obtain firearms illegally and put  them on a vessel, then the shipping company is also involved in an illegal act. The last thing a shipping company needs is for their ship to be delayed and investigated, causing a delay in the delivery of their goods, and sometimes, apprehension of the vessel and Master.
What ISSG has developed, is intrinsically safe firearms alternatives such as pneumatically powered devices. Included in these devises are net entanglement systems and irritant foggers. It is very important to use a very strict rules of engagement when dealing with the pirates. Of course a situation can escalate, but at the same time, you must allow a situation to de-escalate. Use of force needs to be progressive in nature allowing for the pirate to stand down.
The two greatest keys to anti piracy operations are early detection and discernment of the aggressor, and the correct visible defensive posture. The next issue is the appropriate methodology that not only properly defends the vessel but keeps the shipping company from increased liability.
Some companies have come up with their own ways to defend ships and some of these ways actually put the crew of the vessel in greater danger than the actual defensive capability of the security team. The objective of a on board security team is to prevent the ship from being boarded, not to kill pirates.
